Georgia Lacrosse Teams Wind Up On Opposite Ends of Identical Scores

On Friday, the Georgia men’s and women’s lacrosse teams were in action in round-robin tournaments outside the Classic City. Both Red and Black clubs entered the weekend undefeated, but, although the two teams’ matches ended in identical final scores, only one of them stayed unbeaten.

The No. 1-ranked Athenian ladies flew cross-country to take on an East Coast opponent at the UCSB Shootout in Santa Barbara at noon Pacific time. Despite solid defensive efforts by defenders Kelly "Dale" Arnhart, Michele "Meesh" Manis, and Mary Cate "MC" McCue, as well as by goalie Emily Seidel, and despite goals from rookie midfielder Cat Brennen, midfielder Lindsay Brinker, rookie attacker Jenna Dreyer, attacker Murphy Ferguson, midfielder Lisa "Avatar" Riondet, and attacker Kaitlin Shumate, Georgia fell to No. 69 Pittsburgh, 9-7, in the tourney’s opening outing. The Red and Black women will attempt to get back on the winning track against No. 5 UCLA and No. 21 Michigan on Saturday.

The 40th-ranked Bulldog men were in action in the Southern Shootout in Tallahassee on Friday evening, when they faced 31st-ranked border rival South Carolina in the Sunshine State while sporting new gear. Though not as transformed by their new togs as their distaff counterparts, the Red and Black gents mounted a second-half comeback to replicate the women’s 9-7 score, albeit in the right direction this time. Saturday will see Georgia confront tournament host Florida State, the seventh-ranked defending SELC champion.

Further details on the men's match, from our friend Pete Campbell:
Friday night in Tallahassee at the FSU Tourney the UGA Men’s Lacrosse Team found themselves in an old fashion dog-fight with the University of South Carolina Gamecocks but managed to gut out a 9-7 exciting, hard fought, comeback victory and improve their record to 4-0.

Game started quick for the Dawgs with Trent Dean scoring with less than a minute gone in the first to go up 1-0. But the Gamecocks would answer back with three successive goals to go up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. Dean scored early in the 2nd Q on a nice assist from Cory Osekowski to edge closer at 3-2. Gamecocks came back with two more and had the lead 5-2 at the end of the half.

Rather spirited halftime team conference amongst the Dawgs led by Coach Lewandowski and contributions from several Seniors seemed to snap the team out of a bit of a funk and they came out at the start of the third more energized and the intensity level ratcheted up!

Start of the second half saw Michael Trainer continue his good work at Attack and scored twice within two minutes to get the Dawgs within one at 5-4! The Dawgs’ sideline came alive and their play on the field showed a more ferocious effort on both ends of the field. The always stout UGA D-Poles, led by Seiler, Reagan, and Whitney clamped down on the Gamecocks limiting shots on goal. Goalie Busby also came to play in the second half and was solid in goal.

Dean continued his solid work in the game and scored at the 7 minute mark in the third to tie the score at 5-5! Game was on and the Dawgs continued to pour it on with the Middies getting in on the scoring action. George Walker and Moore Hamilton each scored, bringing the score to 7-6. Attackmen Dean and Trainer would each add another goal as the Dawgs continued to pour on the steam and stretch the lead to 9-6. Gamecocks would score late to make the final 9-7.

Great game, great comeback, and great win for the team.
