Signing Day 2012: It's The Energy Bus You Didn't See Coming That Gets You.

After some late drama Signing Day 2012 is essentially in the books, and for the Georgia staff it went about like you would expect. We won some, we lost some, we finished with a class ranked among the top 10 nationally. Pretty standard Mark Richt-era stuff. But what's interesting about this class is that while there are stars galore, it's easy to miss out on the really important things that happened today, which we'll discuss in more detail after the jump.

Star-divide

Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich once said that "the real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 pm on some idle Tuesday." So it is with college football recruiting. Today we managed to start the day with a commitment from the top player in the state of Georgia carried live on national television. We're ending the day with what appears to be a family standoff in Lowndes County between Josh Harvey-Clemons and his kin, or at least some of them, over whether he should instead sign with the University of Florida.

Family business is family business and I can respect that. But today should have been a day for Josh and his family to celebrate together the hard work he's put in to get to where he is, and to look forward to the possibilities in front of him. Instead we have a three ring circus. It's a sad, sad state of affairs no matter how you look at it. I will say that if you know there's a chance your son (or grandson as the case may be) is going to pick a school you don't like on national TV you should iron that out with him beforehand. Don't let him look like a waffler in front of the national media and hordes of fans from rival schools, many of whom are having as irrational a response to this situation as they can muster.

Once the Clemons family soap opera is over, every red and black partisan will fixate over the next few days on how Keith Marshall and John Theus and Josh Harvey-Clemons can help take the Georgia Bulldogs to the next level. In reality, the odds that any of those guys is the starter in Athens on September 1, 2012 when the 'Dawgs take on the Buffalo Bulls is probably 50% or less.

Theus will almost certainly work into the rotation and he might well be a starter at tackle by the time we head to Jacksonville for the Cocktail Party. But he'll have to beat out Austin Long, Watts Dantzler, Zach Debell, and XZavier Ward for a spot. If Keith Marshall is the starter at tailback it will likely indicate something pretty bad about Isaiah Crowell: either he will not have been able to put his injury issues behind him, or he will not have responded as we hoped to the competition. And Josh Harvey-Clemons simply is not going to start ahead of Jarvis Jones or Cornelius Washington. He has a good bit of physical development to do before he sees the field.

But you know who will almost certainly see the field this season? Marshall Morgan, Collin Barber and Quayvon Hicks. Morgan is the kicker out of Florida who may be the best in the country this year at that position. Barber is the punter from Cartersville who will be the heir apparent to Drew Butler. And Hicks is the closest thing to a true I-Formation tailback who we've signed since Shaun Chapas and Fred Munzenmaier. Those guys will be the ones who make this class a success in the short term if it is to be one.

These young men play positions which significantly affect the success of any college football team. They also play positions that the guys at Rivals and Scout really couldn't care less about. How else do you evaluate the fact that Rivals lists Morgan as the #7 player in the nation at his position, yet doesn't even include him among their list of the top 100 players in the state of Florida?

Likewise, had Hicks been ranked as a 4-3 defensive end rather than a fullback, I am certain he would have been a consensus 4 star recruit. Instead he's the #2 player in the nation at his position, a position which is vitally important in Georgia's pro-style offense, and ranked only as the #46 player in the state of Georgia. He's a smart, humble young man who committed to Georgia soon after he was offered because he always wanted to be a Bulldog and hasn't waivered since. He's been one of the best recruiters in this class, even helping bring in guys for 2013. Quayvon Hicks will be one of your favorite 'Dawgs within the next couple of years, you just don't know it yet.

And while we knew going in that we had needs at kicker, punter and fullback, it's funny how the needs ofr this class also changed over time. The Bulldog staff deserves credit for recognizing that and adapting. On Signing Day 2011 many legitimately believed that Georgia needed to sign 3-4 wide receivers for the 2012 class. With the emergence of Malcolm Mitchell , Chris Conley, and Michael Bennett to go along with veterans like Tavarres King, Marlon Brown, Rantavious Wooten, that was no longer the case. So Georgia ends up with Blake Tibbs, who for my money is as good a receiver as you'll find in the state of Georgia. Next season the 'Dawgs will look to sign more players at the position, in what looks to be a deeper year for talent at WR in the state of Georgia and around the southeast.

What we did need were offensive linemen. And we got them. Everyone knows about John Theus. And we already highlighted Mark Beard, a guy who's already on campus. But keep an eye on Greg Pyke. The consensus has been that he'll play guard in Athens but I'm not exactly sure about that. The first video I ever saw of Pyke was him scoring goals for his school's lacrosse team. How many 305 pounders do you think are a true forward threat on the lacrosse team?

Would it have been nice to secure Avery Young, who chose Auburn, or Brandon Greene, who couldn't be flipped from Alabama? Of course. You can never have too many offensive linemen. But I also think the depth issues on our offensive line are somewhat overblown. We don't have a lot of experience, but we certainly have a quorum of bodies. And in the end you can only have so many on the roster at a given time. With today's additions we'll have 13 scholarship offensive linemen and a couple of walk-ons who've actually seen game action as well. Also none of those scholarship offensive linemen will be seniors in 2012. As with receiver, next year's instate offensive line crop is much deeper than this year's. In fact several offers have already gone out (notably to Devondre Seymour, nephew/adopted son of Bulldog great Richard Seymour, and Tri-Cities' Shamire Devine). Georgia is also looking fairly good in the sweepstakes for Florida offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil, a strong candidate for the top player in the state of Florida next year. If we wanted to create some class separation and still have a shot at signing those bluechip players next year, we really couldn't take many more big uglies than we did.

Speaking of big uglies, I am excited about a lot of the guys we took in this class. But I don't know that there's any player in this class that I'm more excited about than Jenkins County defensive tackle Jonathan Taylor. Sure there's the fact that he appreciates the finer things in life, like a good raccoon dinner.*

I'm also pretty keen on Thomson's John Atkins, a guy who could play nose tackle, defensive end or offensive guard in Athens. The guy plays tight end and goalie on the soccer team at 305 pounds. Whatever it is, your argument is invalid.

I'll also be intrigued to follow the development of Harris County's Jordan Jenkins and North Carolina speedsters Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. Every one of those guys has the potential to be All-SEC. Heck, Gurley could be a standout at tailback or safety.

If there's a theme here, it's that this class is loaded with star power. ESPN ranks it the #5 class in the country. 24/7 Sports pegs it #6. If there's one sliver of discontent that I sense from Georgia fans on this site and others (aside from the obvious frustration of the Harvey-Clemons situation) it's that there weren't enough commitments. But if you look at the nifty scholarship tracker provided by the good folks at Rivals, we had 19 to give and (including Harvey-Clemons) we got 19 commitments. So really, you can say we should have signed 5 more guys. And that's a valid opinion. But to say that I think you also have to grant that doing so would put Mark Richt in real danger of a Saban-esque dilemma in a few months unless there was some natural attrition.

Of course that same tracker indicates that we'll have a mere 14 available next year. But we know there'll be defections and injuries and other unfortunate events. We'll sign more than that. We've already offered, by my estimation, at least 36 scholarships to players for the class of 2013. Roughly half of those players are from the state of Georgia. The thing about recruiting is that it's a year-round sport. There's always another class, and we here at Dawg Sports will be talking about the class of 2013 soon enough. But for now, feel free o share your thoughts on the class of 2012 in the comments below. Until later . . .

Go 'Dawgs!!!

*Seriously, if you've never had raccoon stewed with garlic and root vegetables in a cast iron skillet you have lived an incomplete life. I'm not even joking. Plus it's naturally organic and approved for massive defensive linemen.

I really hope the Harvey-Clemons thing resolves soon and he gets to go where he chooses. I’d hate to be stuck somewhere for 3+ years that I didn’t want to be knowing I could have gone to the place I really wanted to be. All that aside, looks like another great signing day for Coach Richt and I’m excited to see the team build on our success from last season.

P.S.

ESPN U just showed Harvey-Clemons tweeted that he was a dog for sure, still no LOI though.

That's good to know. Thanks, KeepSwinging.

The latest I read indicates that the grandfather is AWOL for the time being, but that the family still thinks he’s going to sign. It’s irritating, but not yet worrisome, and it speaks well of Harvey-Clemons’s character that he’s sticking by what he knows is a good decision despite some family pressure.

Hicks

I’m stoked about this guy. Good FB play is one of those things that makes everybody else look great: a clean-up block that springs an RB to the secondary, a well-timed catch out of the backfield, a needed blitz pickup, or the much-beloved upback handoff. From everything I hear, Hicks has a tremendous ethic and will bring the pain to the enemy.

I regret that I have but one "Rec" . . .

. . . to give to this comment.

Nice write up MD -

Two things:

You can never have too many offensive linemen.

Dang stright!

But I also think the depth issues on our offensive line are somewhat overblown.

Du huh?

I would pick a fight with you, however, your post is very balanced and thought out. I can only say I have earned the right to be paranoid about the line, because they have done that too me. I also said I didnt want Mike Bobo around 3+ years ago, and it’s been a long, long uphill battle to where I was proven right.

I give you an “A” for a great post! (and a star and happy face).

We got what we needed and wanted all in all. To hell with rankings.

FWIW... even tho we only picked up 3 OL. the distribution & talent looks pretty good. "IF" we have a strong '13 OL class....

2012…
SR’s… Frix (long snapper)…

I can easily see 10 of these guys contributing meaningful (& hopefully quality) minutes this year…

http://uga.rivals.com/content.asp?SID=878&CID=387116

This just proves my point - look at all the upperclassmen. Couple of those guys get hurt and now we are leaning on underclass men again.

This trend has to stop. We will not beat Bama and LSU without upperclassman depth annually.

And I appreciate the breakdown, Mr Sanchez has shown similar breakdowns, but it doesnt change 10 years of “OMG, Who’s going to play line?” It’s a trend that I am very tired of.

How do you define upperclassmen?

I’ve always considered upperclassmen to mean juniors and seniors. We have six juniors/seniors and ten soph/frosh. It seems to me that while next year has the possibility of being disastrous, we’re trying to correct the problem and are looking to having a good core of upperclassmen two years from now.

I count 5 upperclassmen on this chart, and one is the long snapper.
Let me add with BIG EMPHASIS

One senior on the line – and it’s the long snapper.

Not one single senior starting on the O line. That shouldn’t even be possible. And it tells the story of our line problems very clearly.

I am not disagreeing with anyone on the data for numbers, I am, frankly, pissed we ever got in this situation, one a good OC would have prevented 3 years ago. And I am tired of excuses. We always have good numbers. Until someone gets hurt. And someone doesn’t pan out. Someone leaves. Then we are scrambling. We need UGA to be an NFL stepping stone for the O line just the way it is in virtually every other position.

But we can't sign seniors in a recruiting class toad

so there was no fixing that, the issue may well be 4-5 years from now, if Theus is great and goes pro early and Pyke gets hurt/fails to pan out.

You also said we wouldnt get JUCO linemen. )

Obviously I know you cant get seniors. I mean, I am dumb, but I got that. I see it as an overarching systemic failure that Bobo needs to be fired. I also see it has a failure with CMR to keep getting star players without addressing the O Line. And I promise that the O line always has been, and always will be.

If I recall correctly, I said we'd only get Mark Beard type JUCOs

as in ones that can enroll early and be much more prepared to play come fall.

I simply think the point you needed to make wasn’t that we lack seniors this coming year, it’s that with just Theus and Pyke as incoming FR, we may well lack them in 4-5 years, and the cycle we’ve come to know is just continuing over and over again.

I am going to let this die in the matter of civil discourse.
I'm nervous about Pyke.

He’s coming in with a shoulder injury. Neil Callaway recruited a whole bunch of similarly talented guys with shoulder injuries – the majority of whom didn’t work out because of shoulder injuries.

Bah.

Yeah. I miscounted.

Thats a rec

Well played

Oh I agree TT, even with this class seperation, a lot of untapped potential will have to be realized on the OL for UGA to take the next step if we're to challenge bammer or LSU for a SEC crown..
single purpose

There’s only one thing I want next year, and that’s to beat Alabama. Actually, I want to beat the ever loving hell out of them. Obviously this is a tall order, considering our regular season matchup got bumped for conference expansion. Thus, we’ll have to do it in the SEC championship game, which also means many of the season’s other goals will have taken care of themselves. I don’t care about winning the national championship, and I don’t care about beating someone other than Alabama in Atlanta. I just want to hit them in the mouth as hard as humanly possible and shut their entitled, slimy, redneck asses butts up. An LSU 04’ whipping would be my cup of tea. Hey, wasn’t that the same coach coming off a national title ? Just sayin’……

I know this is crazy talk, but seriously, where is all this hope / promise / righting-the-ship / we-have-a-bright-future headed if not towards to ultimate measuring stick against the team that has become the bully of our league ? There’s no beating around the bush, and you can run but you can’t hide—-Georgia will have arrived when it puts its foot in Alabama’s backside and shows them that there is another dawg in town.

We’ve got a long way to go if you subscribe to the Alabama > LSU > UGA deduction. But IMO, everything else is background noise and bronze medals until we step up and knock those SOBs in the mouth.

Now, when you wrote you don't care about winning a NC, I will actually believe you.

And not turn it into a 200 post comment about whether or not you believed what you wrote.

I understand that point of view, esquiredawg.

Just the same, I’d rather get LSU in the Dome, because we’ve alternated SEC Championship Game wins and losses with them, so next time, it’s our turn.

First, though, let’s worry about beating Missouri.

Lets worry about getting through the offseason injury and drug free.
Mal Moore says...

Note… Bama sux…

MaconDawg...

I’m just catching up on all the news and I’ve got a question that perhaps you or someone could answer: What’s up with Kolton Houston? To have him available would be a nice boost…but do we know where his eligibility stands now? And do you think the Long brothers will contribute? Yeah, it would’ve been nice to sign Avery Young but this guy would probably redshirt anyway…and we’ll always have Paris JUCOs.

I’ll pour myself a nice, stiff Maker’s, hang up and listen. Thanks.

From what I rea ages ago...

I thought that maybe Houston had run afoul of the PED rules. Maybe he took a supplement that he didn’t know was banned. At that point he’s ineligible for at least year and I think until the NCAA clears him again.

Anyone heard something similar/got more info/can correct my possibly wrong or out-dated info? I’m far from a good source here. This is just a case of “pretty sure I read this somewhere…”

By "legitimate I-Formation tailback"...

… I assume you mean that Hicks is a legitimate I-Formation fullback?

Oh hello, that guy.

Touché. Though if we’re being honest, he’s about the same size as Richard Samuel, so …yeah.

Samuel, who should be at FB, so ... yeah.
I asked Verron Haynes about that a while back.

He seemed to think Samuel would make a really good FB in Richt’s offense. He catches well out of the backfield, blocks well, and runs strong going N/S. Not only that… But he does well running out of the I-form with a full head of steam.

Imma adding these guys to ou recruiting class this year...

Since none declared early….

Abry Jones
John Jenkins
Jarvis Jones
Cornelius Washington
Branden Smith
Sanders Commings
Bacarri Rambo
Shawn Williams

Don't give the NCAA any ideas

But you have to add Jenkins and geathers to that list.

MD

A well-thought out and reasoned piece as always.

I know I got sucked into the frenzy a bit this year and while it would have been great to get Young, and either Patterson or JaQuay and keep Chester, we have some big time contributors in some key positions. Honestly, with all the potential OLBs we have, Grantham is going to have his work cut out for him to keep them happy, cause as we have heard, everyone wants to start on day 1 (despite that not being the best for them or the team).

I think some of the panic and sour grapes come from 2 main things:
1. There are always people who are going to bitch & moan regardless.
2. The SEC is so competitive and while you can do good, if the competition is doing better, it can be deflating.*

Great points on 2013, to which I feel we have a good start. I don’t know all the names yet, but I have heard exactly what you have said- Georgia is deep and super talented in 2013. I’ve even heard that misses won’t be as costly as there are so many good guys.
One OL I think we are in good standing with that you didn’t mention is Kublanow, who could be the next Ben Jones. And if we don’t get Nkemdiche, don’t panic, cause I’ve heard Big Red can take care of him.

Let’s focus on getting these 19 guys in, trained up and whipping some @$$ in 2012 and beyond.

*Thanks for posting the number of spots we have. I know when we see ONLY 18 or 19, for us and 27+ for the SEC West teams, it is easy to say, “Why can’t we even get 25, but if we don’t have spots, we don’t have spots.”

This is a wonderfully written assessment about our recruiting class

MaconDawg, I have to applaud for a well written unbiased article. Another good way of putting this is we have quality over quantity. Alabama can sign 29, 35, or even a bus load of athletes, but Georgia can only worry about its situation, and we got a lot of quality players to fill great needs for our team. I think 2012 will turn out to be a very good year as long as we stay the track and learn from the mistakes during the past two seasons. In 2010 and even in 2009, I kept talking to myself that if Georgia was going to strike it big, it will be in the 2012 football season. Our schedule plays into our favor as we miss the 3 powerhouses in the SEC West. Our home schedule is probably the weakest I’ve seen in a long time, and I expect the team to be undefeated at home this season or else. Probably the biggest threat we see that could undermine our season is South Carolina and possibly the Atlanta boys to close out the regular season. We will have great help on at the RB position, and if our offensive line is good, we could dominate. I hope this 2012 football season is the year we have been waiting for, and I hope Mark Richt can kick some ass (pardon my French).

Talking about 2013....

Two Words: Robert Nkemdiche.

Favorite to be the number 1 player in the country in 2013 and he is from Loganville, GA. Apparently, Alabama is the frontrunner but we have an entire year to persuade him. Let’s get to it.

Unlikely

CTG could pull a Jenkins on him, but his HS coach is a former Bama player. Plus, with Adams, Isaac and others, we can afford to miss.

Foster is the Bama flip to focus on.

Agreed. Conn is a great coach but my suspicion is helped push ...

Lorenzo Washington to Bama, he’ll do the same with Nkemdiche. There’s absolutely nothing our staff can do about that unless and until Saban takes the Cowboys job and Kirby gets hired at Tennessee.

And you’re right about Kublanow. He has the potential to be a good one.

But then again Macon,

the same could have been said about McPherson at Lowndes and the players he’s had who went to FSU. Not saying we get Nkemdiche, but as you note with the Bama coaches, there’s a full year between now and next signing day, and a lot can happen in the meantime.

We're not getting Nkemdiche

which sucks, but he would have been a “tweener” for us anyway. Not really big enough to be a DE in the 3-4 (which I am not sure he would want to play) and maybe not good enough in space to be a OLB (although I haven’t watched enough film on him to say that for sure). To be fair Bama plays a base 3-4 as well so I am not sure what the difference is in their scheme and ours that would be more appealing. Maybe CTG can work his magic between now and NSD next year but I highly doubt it.

Bear Bryant rule - we keep them from getting him. And CTG can work magic.
Gotta get Foster.

Alec could leave early and we lose Christian Robinson and Gilliard at ILB as well. Foster could come start with Amarlo the right away in 2013.

Please ignore the extra "the".

Sometimes rewording a sentence mid-sentence just doesn’t work out the way you want it to.

I agree

Big needs for 2013 are ILB, O and D line, and DB (specifically CB)

It would be awesome if we got him somehow, though.

That man is an absolute freak.
