In a surprising move Harris County linebacker/defensive end Jordan Jenkins committed to Georgia tonight over offers from Alabama, Auburn, and Florida. It was a shocking development for a recruit who seemed at one time or another to be favoring any number of schools besides Georgia. Perhaps Jenkins' commitment goes to show that when the recruitment of a bigtime player goes into January, it's perilous to bet against the homestate school. Jenkins is a military brat whose father Ronald moved the family to Hamilton, located on the Alabama line, when his son was in the 7th grade and the elder Jenkins was stationed at Fort Benning. He summed up his decision by saying:
"I really like what Coach Grantham's done with Jarvis Jones and Justin Houston last year . . .Coach Richt is a good man, a Christian man."
At 6'3 and 245 pounds right now, Jenkins may grow into a defensive end by the time his collegiate career is over. Most recently he was dominant in the U.S. Army All-American Game at that position notching 8 tackles, including 2 sacks.
We'll have more on this huge pickup for the Bulldogs later. But for now, kudos to Coach Todd Grantham who spearheaded Jenkins recruitment and likely made the difference in the end as both a defensive coordinator and position coach. This is a real feather in his hat. Until later. . .
Go 'Dawgs!!!

I like the part
Where he said his mama wouldn’t have to worry about him at Georgia and that his family wouldn’t feel safe with him going to Bama.
Oversigning FTL!

About time families started to realize there was no commitment to the athletes
from the University(sic) of Alabama
Dawg2011 - January 9, 2012
Can we not do that?
I hate seeing the (sic) thing after Universities. I understanding trying to denigrate the academics of an inferior school, but it just feels to Tech-y to me.
blackertai - January 9, 2012
Gotta side with blackertai on this one.
Alabama is still stupid, even without the (sic).
vineyarddawg - January 9, 2012
According to advertisements appearing on this weblog recently, . . .
. . . you can get a distance degree from the University of Alabama! Click here to see how!

Same here...
and about how he’d feel comfortable talking to the head coach.

Congrats to Jenkins
and to our staff. Now we’re rolling…
DavetheDawg - January 9, 2012
Hats off for having this posted exactly 2 minutes after his announcement.
Someone’s on top of things.

I'm not used to such crisp offensive execution.

Bobo does not approve
by posting this so soon it shows that you planned ahead of time and made changes once you saw the way it was going….
Dawg2011 - January 9, 2012
Our new recruiting coordinator apparently changed Jenkins' mind at the last minute:

WOOF WOOF WOOF, DOGS GO, THEM SIC i say (hear yoda laugh in your head)
that’s awesome and a rec worthy post

Per AJC
“Jordan Jenkins commits to Georgia, Dawgs still struggle in recruiting and will be lucky to have a Top 10 class”
RedCrake - January 9, 2012 via mobile
I have faith in the future
I will try to avoid saying negative about the AJC but I dont think they are close on that one…
PugetDawg - January 9, 2012
Haha. What? We had the #7 class (per ESPN) prior to landing Jenkins.
If we get even a couple of the bigger 6 or 7 targets left on our board, we’re a lock for a top ten class at worst. But seriously, is it fair to say a team is struggling just because they will be lucky to have a top 10 class?
Swarles_Barkley - January 9, 2012
The AJC is the only media source more beholden to their preconceived notions than ESPN
RedCrake - January 9, 2012
Florida fans and reporters seem very shocked. Have they gotten that delusional?
tankertoad - January 9, 2012
There was a lot of chatter . . .
on Florida message boards that he was going to Florida. The family had made a big deal about Jordan wanting to study engineering, and they appear to have convinced themselves that their engineering program is that superior.
MaconDawg - January 9, 2012
The only time I'm convinced a recruit will decide based on academics
is if a school like Stanford is in the mix. When choosing between four SEC schools not named Vanderbilt, it’s not like this kid is Ivy League material. 9 out of 10 times he’s fine with the academics at any of them.
Swarles_Barkley - January 9, 2012
Unfortunately,
Georgia does not have a proper engineering school. My old grad school advisor is one of the guys trying to get that fixed, but (wonder of wonders) the Georgia Tech crowd in state politics are opposing it tooth and nail. I believe we finally got authorization for an electrical engineering program in 2010, but it’s going to be an uphill fight to get it funded.
opsomath - January 10, 2012
It's pathetic
when one academic institution hates another so much that it literally impedes on the expansion and growth of the other. Healthy competition for students and advancement of programs is good, but simply preventing the other from making improvements is disgusting.
Swarles_Barkley - January 10, 2012
And UGA already has a decent math and computer deparment. And chemistry.
tankertoad - January 10, 2012
Biology's good too.
Particularly virology/infectious diseases. Okay, we may have gotten our start with poultry ailments, but once the equipment is there we can use it for anything. :)
opsomath - January 10, 2012
And not just inhibiting the other schools growth
but you negatively impact the state as well in the lack of qualified engineering professionals. It’s a problem that thankfully those out of Augusta and MCG noticed and helped alleviate.
Mr. Sanchez - January 10, 2012
Good point.
Excellent example.
I think half of it is just Georgia Tech not wanting Georgia to get into the AAU, just so they can hold it over the heads of
all Georgia fansall University of Georgia alumnithe handful of Georgia fans who’ve heard of the AAUthe handful of Georgia fans who care about the AAUNCT.T Kyle King - January 10, 2012
The AAU is stupid and I hate it
It’s mostly a big ten/pac 12 circle jerk, as far as I can tell. UGA is #62 in the most recent USNWR rankings. Indiana, Iowa State (#97), Michigan State, Oregon (#101), Purdue, Missouri (#92), Minnesota, Kansas (#101), iowa, Colorado (#94)…………………………………
are all ranked below UGA but are prestigious members of the almighty AAU.
Jeremiah Johnson. - January 11, 2012
I completely agree.
One of the reasons the AAU kicked Nebraska out is that the AAU doesn’t consider agricultural scientific research to be valid scientific research, which is condescending, ignorant, and wrong.
T Kyle King - January 11, 2012
Really.
Well, screw those guys, anyway. They can eat beakers. huff
opsomath - January 13, 2012
Not one to get overly hyped about H.S. players but...................
this is awesome……………..
JRL - January 9, 2012
YES!!!
I was watching the All-American game and he was looking completely dominant and his plays left the announcers raving. Glad to have him on board.
saipol - January 9, 2012
wowsa
I didn’t expected that.
Mark Mandingo - January 9, 2012 via mobile
I coached against him
when he was in the 8th grade. He was an absolute beast then, and is even more so now. It took everything we could do to beat them. We had to run away from his side the whole game because we could not block him.
CoachSpurlock - January 9, 2012
At UA game they played him out of poisition at DT
yet he still got two sacks and 8 tackles
Dawgs013 - January 9, 2012
It is amazing to think . . .
he was giving up 50+ pounds to the guys across the line from him and still beating them in the running game. Jenkins is strong for his size and will only get stronger in the Georgia program.
MaconDawg - January 9, 2012
He looked good there too, very physical
and showed a great ability to use his long arms to shed blockers.
Mr. Sanchez - January 9, 2012
Quotes:
tankertoad - January 9, 2012
Giddy
I am probably still on the sugar high of Jenkins commit, but what it…
We closed with these recruits which is possible:
- Jenkins (got him)
- JHC (supposedly recruiting for UGA out in in TX)
- Young or B. Greene (he would have to flip from Bama)
- Gurley or Davis (I think we have to get at least 1)
- Dawson or Redmond
2 LBs, 1 OT, 1 RB, 1 DB
+ some other guys. I would hope we could get Patterson (WR), but not sure if that will happen.
fotodog - January 9, 2012
Need O lineman for 3 years from now.
tankertoad - January 9, 2012
We already have 3 this class + 1 more
fotodog - January 9, 2012
I'd put the chance of Greene flipping...
at 10% or less unless Saban needs to clear room. Even if we don’t sign another OL this is a great group. Young would be the icing on the cake. Plus with the 5 we signed last season and the sophomores playing this season (Gates, Burnette, Austin Long) we’re not as thin in 2012-2013 as we were this year.
MaconDawg - January 9, 2012 via mobile
That's good stuff, however, we seemingly always loose O linemen to injury. I just feel like we can't have enough.
tankertoad - January 9, 2012
If tt were the OC, he would find a way to have an eleven oline man set.
Just because.
The984 - January 10, 2012
Personally
I think Young has as high a potential as anyone, maybe even Theus. The dudes athleticism is off the charts. And UGA is on him hard too. Will Friend is doing work in recruiting right now.
Dawgs013 - January 9, 2012
4 already
Theus, Pyke, Brown, and Beard.
Mr. Sanchez - January 9, 2012
I'd like multiple DBs
we need to replenish the depth chart.
Mr. Sanchez - January 9, 2012
Interestingly Yuri Wright ...
allegedly cancelled his official to Georgia because we ’re full at DB. Which makes me think that some combination of Sheldon Dawson, Will Redmond and Chris Brown are already onboard.
MaconDawg - January 9, 2012 via mobile
I read this as well. It definitely points to silent commitment(s).
And probably more than one, since he said they’re full. Not likely to scare him off if we’ve only got one guy committed.
Swarles_Barkley - January 9, 2012
A silent commitment from a teenage male?
Why does that strike me as being about as meaningful as Kevin Arnold’s attempt to be “secret friends” with Margaret Farquhar in “The Wonder Years”?
T Kyle King - January 10, 2012
Mosely also made similar comments, so maybe that is true about have a few already under wraps
fotodog - January 10, 2012
I thought Chris Brown was a RB
and I’m wary of silent commits. As often as these kids back out on public commits, just how committed are they if they won’t even say so publicly?
Mr. Sanchez - January 10, 2012
defense u
I’ve gotta believe this is a dividend of Coach Russell, er, Grantham’s willingness to stand up for his players first and ask questions later.
memphisdawg - January 9, 2012 via Android app
Very good point.
I had forgotten about the Grantham-Franklin ordeal. I remember thinking about how big of a win it was for us off the field to have a coordinator that passionate about his players.
Swarles_Barkley - January 9, 2012
Good grab Dawgs,
Saw a couple of interviews and a story about him, seems like a real good kid. I believe his father is in the military which is always a plus for me. Not looking forward to seeing him line up across from us.
Aaron.50cal - January 10, 2012
GATA!
Just shows how valuable CTG is.
Welcome to Dawg Nation, Jordan!
Jman781 - January 10, 2012
I love this signing
I didn’t think the Dawgs had a chance but yet here he is. I am really looking forward to seeing just how nasty our defense will be next season.
